A record-length calendar

The 2025 season will be historic, with 22 rounds, a record in MotoGP history. It kicks off on 2 March in Thailand at the Chang International Circuit and finishes on 16 November in Valencia. Hungary has a special place in the season: on 22-24 August, Balaton Park Circuit hosts the Hungarian Grand Prix.

New team line-ups

The riders' transfer period (the “silly season”) brought some big changes:

  • Marc Márquez races for the Ducati factory team, while Fermin Aldeguer takes his place at Gresini Racing.
  • Jorge Martín moves to the Aprilia factory team, where Marco Bezzecchi will be his teammate.
  • The KTM factory team welcomes Pedro Acosta, while Enea Bastianini and Maverick Viñales will race for Red Bull KTM Tech3.
  • Fabio Quartararo stays with Yamaha, with Alex Rins as his teammate.

Technical changes

Although major rule changes are not expected until 2027, a few smaller changes already take effect in 2025:

  • Michelin is introducing a new front tyre that copes better with aerodynamic loads and temperature fluctuations.
  • The FIM has announced an engine development freeze for 2025 and 2026. Only Honda and Yamaha can be exempt, as long as their results do not improve significantly.

Hungarian Grand Prix, 22-24 August 2025

The 2025 MotoGP World Championship promises an extremely close fight, with several big names in the running for the title.

Who will be the top favourite in the 2025 MotoGP World Championship

Several names stand out among the championship favourites, riders who are expected to have the best chance of winning the title this season. Based on the rider moves and their results in recent seasons, these are the ones to watch.

1. Jorge Martín

Jorge Martín, the 2024 world champion, has moved to the Aprilia factory team and starts the season as defending champion. Martín has already shown that he can dominate with fast, tactical racing, which makes him one of the top favourites.

2. Marc Márquez

Marc Márquez rides for the Ducati Lenovo Team. With his huge experience and Ducati's competitive bike, the eight-time world champion could be a serious threat to every rival.

3. Pecco Bagnaia

Bagnaia, who also rides for the Ducati Lenovo Team, has already proven that he can fight for the title. Thanks to Ducati's strong line-up and technical edge, Bagnaia could also be in the running for another world title.

4. Pedro Acosta

Young talent Pedro Acosta rides for the KTM factory team, and expectations are already high. Because of his dominant performances in the lower classes, many see him as a future champion.

5. Fabio Quartararo

Fabio Quartararo remains a pillar of the Yamaha factory team. Although Yamaha has not been the most competitive bike in recent seasons, Quartararo's talent and persistence mean he can always spring a surprise.

6. Marco Bezzecchi

Marco Bezzecchi continues his career in the Aprilia factory team as Jorge Martín's teammate. Given his speed and progress, Bezzecchi could also have a say in the title fight.

Technical advantages and challenges

Ducati still has a clear technical edge, which could give Márquez and Bagnaia an advantage. Aprilia keeps improving, though, and Bezzecchi as well as Martín could benefit from this. KTM has strengthened its line-up with young talent, while getting back to the front will be a big challenge for Yamaha and Honda.

Summary

The 2025 MotoGP World Championship promises an extremely close fight, with several big names in the running for the title. Jorge Martín starts with the advantage of being defending champion, but Márquez's experience and Bagnaia's speed could make life hard for him. It is also worth keeping an eye on the new generation, riders like Pedro Acosta, who could spring a surprise. On 24 August the season also stops in Hungary at Balaton Park Circuit, where we can see these iconic riders in action live. If the series returns to Hungary, book your tickets and accommodation in good time.
