Tihany, the romantic village of old times: a journey back in time in the heart of Balaton

Tihany is not just a village on the shore of Lake Balaton but a living legend, where romance, the magic of nature and centuries-old culture come together.

Just imagine walking hand in hand through a place where past and present intertwine, where every stone and every street tells a story. Tihany is not just a village on the shore of Lake Balaton but a living legend, where romance, the magic of nature and centuries-old culture come together. The scent of purple lavender, the mysterious tale of the echo, the baroque splendour of the abbey and the quiet of the lake's blue water all tell you that every moment here is special.

It is one of the most romantic destinations on Lake Balaton, where the Benedictine Abbey founded in 1055, the legendary echo, the lavender fields in June, the geyser cones and the charm of the Inner Lake create a special atmosphere. The Tihany Peninsula offers more than sights: it is a real journey back to the romantic village of old times, where every walk, every view and every legend leaves you with a special memory.

Tihany is one of the most romantic destinations on Lake Balaton, where the Benedictine Abbey founded in 1055, the legendary echo, the lavender fields in June, the geyser cones and the charm of the Inner Lake create a special atmosphere.

Tihany Benedictine Abbey: the cradle of romance and history

The Benedictine Abbey rises on a hilltop in the heart of the village and offers a panorama that is wonderfully romantic. King Andrew I founded the monastery in 1055, also as a family burial place.

The present twin-towered baroque church was built in the mid-18th century. Inside, a beautiful carved wooden altar, gilded statues and baroque-rococo decoration enchant visitors.

The crypt of the abbey is the burial place of King Andrew I. Interestingly, the church is aligned with the rising sun, as old churches were.

A community of monks still lives here today, providing pastoral care and also welcoming guests and organising cultural events. The abbey is surrounded by the unmistakable Balaton panorama, which is a magical sight especially at sunset.

The legend of the Tihany echo: love, betrayal and a curse

One of Tihany's best-known phenomena is the echo, which has existed since the mid-18th century, when the present abbey was built. Words shouted from Echo Hill bounce back from the north side of the abbey, about 300 metres away.

According to legend, Tihany was a beautiful fairy with golden hair who led her goats to the water of Lake Balaton every evening, singing as she went. Balaton, lord of the lake, and his son both listened to her song in rapture. But when she realised that everyone admired her, pride took hold of her, and she decided to sing only for those who paid her in precious stones.

Balaton's son suffered so much without the fairy's voice that he fell seriously ill. In despair, his father offered all his treasures to Tihany so that his son could hear the healing song again. But when the last pearl was gone, Tihany would not give in, and the boy died of grief.

Balaton flew into a terrible rage and raised huge waves that swept away the goats, which all drowned in the lake. The fairy fled into a cave, but the churning water brought down the cave entrance and trapped her forever. In the end, Balaton put a curse on the girl: whoever speaks to her, she must answer. And so the Tihany echo was born.

A small pillar on the hillside, the echo stone, marks the spot from which you have to shout towards the church to hear the Tihany echo.

Lavender fields: purple fever and June magic

The name Tihany is almost inseparable from lavender. Lavender growing has been a living tradition on the peninsula for decades.

During the lavender harvest, the "pick your own" programme lets visitors pick lavender, take photos and enjoy the purple fields blending with the golden light of Lake Balaton.

The Lavender Tihany distillery, show workshop and exhibition welcomes visitors. Here you can get a glimpse of how lavender is processed, and try and buy the products made on site.

The geyser field and the Aranyház geyser cone: a wonder unique in Europe

The geyser field between the Szarkád Forest and the Inner Lake formed about three million years ago. During volcanic activity, hot springs burst to the surface as geysers, and the Tihany geyser cones are unique in Europe.

Post-volcanic activity created many geyser cones. The best known is the Aranyház ("Golden House") geyser cone, which rises above the forest like a white rock castle and takes its name from the yellow lichens growing on it.

From the top of the geyser cone there is a wonderful view of the Inner Lake, the old village and the varied central part of the Tihany Peninsula. Limy and siliceous mud was continuously deposited from the hot-water lakes and gradually turned into solid rock.

You can reach Aranyház along the Lóczy Lajos nature trail. Several small and larger non-karst cave hollows also open up here.

Inner Lake and Outer Lake: reflections born in volcanic craters

Three lakes play an important part in the beauty of the Tihany landscape: Lake Balaton, the Outer Lake and the Inner Lake. The peninsula's inner lakes formed in former volcanic craters, simply from collected rainwater.

The shore of the Inner Lake radiates calm and peace, many special bird and reptile species live here, and walkers are rewarded with a wonderful panorama. The lake bed is covered with fine mud rich in organic matter, which is wet and therefore shifts at the slightest pressure.

Lóczy Lajos nature trail: a romantic stroll in nature

The Lóczy Lajos nature trail is the first nature trail in Hungary and takes in the most beautiful places and sights of the Tihany Peninsula. The route starts at the Apáti church ruin near Sajkod, then leads over Apáti Hill, Nyereg Hill and Csúcs Hill into the Szarkád Forest.

Finally, passing the geyser field and Aranyház, you reach the old village. The trail runs through a protected area of the Balaton Uplands National Park.

Along the way you get to know the most important natural sights of the Tihany Peninsula: the geyser cones, the caves and the unrivalled views. The trail is named after the Hungarian geologist Lajos Lóczy.

Apáti church ruin and the monks' caves: medieval relics

Around the 13th-century church ruin at the entrance to the Tihany Peninsula, on the Road 71 side, there once stood the village of Apáti, which belonged to the abbot of Tihany and was destroyed during the Ottoman occupation. The church ruin is still a reminder of the medieval past.

Along the top of the eastern side of Tihany and the Tihany Peninsula run the remains of an Iron Age earthwork, the Óvár. On its eastern side you will find the monks' caves (Barátlakások), dwellings carved into the rock face. They were once home to the monks whom King Andrew I's wife brought with her from the Grand Principality of Kyiv.

On the forest path to the monks' caves you will find the Ciprián spring, named after Abbot Ciprián Halbrik.

Why is Tihany the perfect choice for a romantic getaway?

Tihany is special because history, nature, legends and romance meet in one place. The lavender fields, the legend of the echo, the splendour of the abbey, the uniqueness of the geyser cones and the calm of the Inner Lake all offer unforgettable experiences for couples, families and nature lovers alike.

The Tihany Peninsula is rich not only in sights but also in things to do: wine tours, wine tastings, winery visits, hikes, lookout towers and cultural events all await visitors.
